Fuel has always been taxed heavily in India since a long time. As most crude is imported govt. taxes it to reduce the fiscal deficit. An easy source of income. Deregulation of fuel prices did only one good thing: reduce the price difference between petrol and diesel. Other than that its another hogwash. Its a win only the govt, and they benefit when the crude oil prices are lower. At the current juncture there is no way the govt. is going to reduce taxes because the govt. coffers are empty. Apart from that oil companies what their share due to the investment for BS6 up-gradation. This leaves actually less margin for the retailer at pump. In spite of such high fuel prices in India, what irks me most is that the fuel quality is nowhere near what is available in other countries. Fuel octane rating is lower and fuel adulteration is rampant.
